MTV Video Music Awards 2011 - Red (or in this case white) Carpet Fashion Round Up

The MTV Video Music Awards were held in L.A. this past Sunday and as always the white carpet was a definite focal point of discussion.
For me the fashion was a case of highs, lows and a whole lot of "What were you thinking?" moments. Here's some of the fashion highlights...

Easily the best dressed at the ceremony was expectant mother Beyonce. I completely fell for her bright Lanvin gown which proudly showed off her new baby bump, accessorised with sleek silver jewellery she couldn't have looked more elegant if she tried.

Flying the flag for the Brits were Jessie J and Adele. Jessie, ever the trooper, hopped onto the white carpet in her bejewelled crutches and performed a part of a house band during the show. Jessie's never one to fade into the background so I was happy to see her looking so OTT despite her injury. Bravo girl!
Almost a polar opposite was Adele, looking just as great with "Go big or go home" hair and a chic Burberry dress. Way to rep a British designer Adele!

Ladies and Gentlemen. There are ways to get my attention on a red carpet. You either look incredibly chic and wonderful a-la-Beyonce at this event or you wear something so outlandish that I end up falling in love with what you're wearing anyway.
Nicki Minaj did neither but it was hard to ignore this monstrosity of an outfit. I love a hot mess as much as any  one but this was just 100 on the ridiculous scale. Tone it down next time Nicki.

The VMAs wouldn't be the VMAs without it's teen stars and three girls who have certainly grown up in the VMA spotlight are Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus. I remember when they first started attending these events and now I think all three are soon to be or are already 19, I should probably accept they'll be dressing alot more grown up now.
Demi Lovato stepped out in a silver Mandalay mini dress and though she physically looks fabulous, those following me on Twitter will know that I thought that there was something Snooki-ish about her outfit. Call me prude but I still think the boobs or legs rule is a must on the red carpet, even at the VMAs.
I did a double take when I saw Selena Gomez, the blurry live stream I was watching made me think Cheryl Cole had come out for the awards. The Julien MacDonald dress itself is gorgeous and she did pick great accessorises, but I don't know if it completely suited her as much I wanted it to.
A surprising favourite from this awards was Miley Cyrus in a Cavalli gown. Those who have followed me for a while will know I've been a harsh critic of Ms Cyrus' style but this isn't too bad. She looks great, the dress isn't too revealing and suits her 18 years or age. I could nit-pick and say that I'd prefer the floral pattern on the dress wasn't there and that she shouldn't have worn the necklace, but I'll let it slide. Keep it up Miley!

Black was a big trend on the white carpet. JoJo wore a Marco Marco mini dress, my new favourite person ever [I've been watching the new series of the X Factor avidly] Kelly Rowland in a very showgirl-esque dress; and Britney Spears in a sparkly Moschino dress, but I hate hate hate her shoe choice >_<
As chic as black looks, I was crying out for some colour from the attendees.

Shall we get onto Lady Gaga? I can't be the only one who was eagerly anticipating a grand white carpet entrance to the VMA's, after last year's McQueen gown and her egg at the Grammys I was hoping to be blown away again.
Well I was blown away for completely different reasons.
Gaga forwent the white carpet, though I spotted Joe Calderone in the backstage livestream, instead she donned the stage as her male alter ego dressed in a similar outfit to Taylor Lautner at this event. I don't know how I feel about this. The performance was incredible and she/he rocked the stage, proving herself more talented than many of the actresses in Hollywood. But part of me was hoping for a Mama Monster costume change halfway through, especially when she was presenting Britney with her tribute and award.
Ah well there's always next year.

I never like ending on a low note so let's talk Katy Perry, who encompassed the real fun spirit of the VMAs in an Atelier Versace dress. Though she reminded me of a certain fictional character (those who have read The Hunger Games know exactly who I'm talking about) her look definitely grows on me every time I see it. It's not too outlandish, but it's not bland and it's totally Katy kitsch.
And I can never resist a parasole ;D

Okay...I actually thought Lady Gaga was Prince there.

And Katy Perry. Well what can I say? SNAP! We have matching hair! And, naturally, I love her outfit as always!
