MTV Video Music Awards 2011 - Red (or in this case white) Carpet Fashion Round Up

The MTV Video Music Awards were held in L.A. this past Sunday and as always the white carpet was a definite focal point of discussion.
For me the fashion was a case of highs, lows and a whole lot of "What were you thinking?" moments. Here's some of the fashion highlights...

This Week...

- What I wore to my dad's birthday meal last Wednesday [chinos & mocassins: New Look; top: oldie from the Philippines; owl necklace: Dorothy Perkins], and my lush lasagne :D -
- I went shopping on Thursday with a friend, went a bit denim crazy with new skinny jeans from New Look and finally bought a denim shirt from H&M. Also got some cheap accessories from Primark [yellow skull scarf - £3, stag necklace - £2, purple stone necklace - £2.50 = BARGAIN!] -
- My outfit and a preview from my trip to Brighton today. [What I wore - denim shirt: H&M; white tank top: from London Fashion Weekend; leggings, red tank top and slip-on shoes: New Look]
I'll post a proper post about Brighton in the week, it deserves it's own post ^_^ -

Wishlist Item...

Sea of Tranquility Dress
$99.99 from ModCloth
It may be August but that never stops clouds forming over the UK. This dress is a a nicer representation of the cloudy skies that are circling above me currently. I actually really love the pattern, it's very subtle and the draping is really beautiful. Plus the ribbon is a nice simple addition to the dress. It could carry very easily into the Autumn too with a nice thick cardigan and knee high boots.

DIY #2 T-Shirt to Knotted Tank Top

I had a major wardrobe clear-out about a week ago and now have a pile of things I need to fix, or turn into something else.
This t-shirt will probably be the first of many that will get turned into a tank top.
Here's how I did it.

1) Take your t-shirt and down the sides from the top of the sleeve. How far down you go will depend on how you want to wear the tank top, I wanted to wear it with another vest top underneath so mine reaches down past my ribs. Make sure you do not cut too far towards the bottom of the shirt though, otherwise you'll have little material at the bottom to hold the shirt together as a tank top.
2) Lower the neckline of the t-shirt, making sure you only cut the front neckline then save this piece for later. You can stretch the fabric for a 'drape' neckline effect.
Turn the t-shirt over and cut a 'V' shape into the back of the neckline. How big this neckline is depends on how thin you want the straps, but preferably keep them thick to make the next stage easier.
3) Take the spare neck piece from Stage 2 and place it under the 'V' neck area. Gather the material from both sides of the back of the t-shirt; then using the neckpiece, tie a tight knot at the base of the 'V'. This will create the knotted back.
Cut off excess fabric in the knot, if you want it to be more secure you can sew the knot to the t-shirt.
The back of the top should now look like the image below.
5) Tidy up and cut off any excess fabric, adjust the knot to suit your taste. And there you go!

This Week...

- A chill week, but a tale of two weather types and the reason I hate British Summertime.
I wore the first outfit on a brilliantly sunny day [t-shirt/necklace/belt: New Look, skirt: TopShop]; the next day it downpoured with rain, so I snuggled up under my duvet for most of the day [sweater: ASDA, necklace: New Look] -
- I had a major wardrobe clear out last week and now have a pile of clothes I either need to DIY or mend. I DIY-ed this Disney t-shirt last Thursday, keep an eye out for a blog post about how I did it. -
- My nails for this week were a lovely Autumnal berry colour [Boots Natural Collection, 'Black Cherry'] -
- Started and finished Divergent by Veronica Roth. It's brilliant, if you like The Hunger Games READ IT! No sequel till next year apparently though =( -

Wishlist Item...

A|Wear Aztec Printed Mini Skirt
£25 from ASOS
The sun came out today (woo hoo!), so I thought I'd do a wishlist item to celebrate!
I am such a sucker for an Aztec print. This skirt is no exception. Following on from the Summer aztec trend, the print for A/W11 is more subdued with lots of burnt oranges and shades of browns. I really love the layering on the this skirt too, very subtle-y 80's chic.
Here's a closer look at the print.

Chloe Grace Moretz. Remember that name people because I have a feeling we'll be seeing alot more of this young lady in the future.
Why am I mentioning her now?

LINKS À LA MODE: August 11th

I'm very proud and humbled to say that this is my first ever mention on the IFB Links a la Mode for my review of Style Yourself. It means so much to me as a relatively new-ish blogger to get some recognition from others in the blogsphere, especially when mentioned alongside many fabulous bloggers and posts. Thanks again to IFB for mentioning my little post ^_^

One of the major perks of being a fashion blogger is joining a rich community of people to learn from. This week's links are all about education--from posts that take a critical look at fashion-inspired books, to an inside look at the much buzzed about fashion summer camp. Of course, we couldn't leave out a link to our favorite education event... the upcoming IFB Conference! We hope you enjoy (and learn something, too!)

Teen Choice Awards 2011 - Fashion round up

It's been a while since I've reviewed an awards show ^_^
The 2011 Teen Choice Awards were held in Los Angeles, showcasing the biggest names in teen pop culture. As a less formal event than something like the Golden Globes or Oscars I was on the lookout for some fun Summer red carpet outfits....
[warning: photo heavy post!]
My personal favourite at the event was Taylor Swift. Channeling her inner Marilyn in a white retro inspired Rafael Cennamo dress. Her eyeshadow added a welcome pop of colour too and I love her bow peep toes.
